First-Grader Born Without Hands Wins Penmanship Award

Annie Clark, a 7-year-old born without hands but with a can-do spirit, has won a national award for penmanship.
The first grader at Wilson Christian Academy in the Pittsburgh-area was awarded the Nicholas Maxim Special Award for Excellent Penmanship at a surprise assembly at her school Wednesday, where she was presented with a trophy and $1,000 prize from Zaner-Bloser, the textbook publishing company that sponsors the contest.
After accepting the award, Annie demonstrated for the audience how she writes, gripping the pencil steadily between her forearms to perfect the letters and capitalization.
"She is a studious and conscientious student who really strives for perfection," her teacher Laura Erb said. "She is very determined to get it right. When she does any kind of writing, she wants to make sure that it's clear and concise and she really takes pride in her work."
Erb said Annie sometimes has to stand up to give herself leverage over the lined paper, but always keeps up in the classroom with her peers. In fact, she tutors other students.
"We don't consider her a special ed [student], she's just Annie," Erb said. "She picks up on things very quickly. She keeps pace with the classroom and the curriculum."
Despite her disability, Annie can use scissors and glue in class, Erb said, and has learned how to dress herself, feed herself, swim and ride a bike. She also excels at math.
"This has been a very natural thing for her. She just did it, she wrote just like this. She didn't have therapy," Erb explained.
Now in its 21st year, the Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest is an annual event for grade school students that promotes penmanship. This year, the contest included a new category for students with disabilities after Nicholas Maxim, a fifth grader from Maine who was born without hands or lower arms, applied to the general contest last year and impressed judges with his penmanship skills.
Courtesy Zaner-BloserStudents can submit a manuscript in print or cursive to enter. Annie won the manuscript contest. On her entry form for Grades 1-2, she wrote the required sentence: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."
In response to the question, "What do you like handwriting?" she carefully dotted the "i" and wrote: "Handwriting is fun and special!"
More than 2.5 million students have participated in the contest over the years, according to company estimates.
Annie's parents, Tom and Mary Ellen Clark, have three biological children and six adopted children from China, including Annie, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. Annie came to Western Pennsylvania at age 2.
"She’s kind and sweet and loving and has added so much to our family," her mother Mary Ellen Clark said. "We just all adore her, and we can’t imagine life without her."
Described as shy, Annie was surprised to learn at the assembly that she had won the award since her mom was asked not to tell her beforehand.
“She went up to receive the trophy and I could tell she was overwhelmed, but she was poised,” Mary Ellen Clark said. “Then I would say it started to sink in and I saw her smile and I could tell she was enjoying the moment.”
"She was shocked," Annie's sister Amy, 25, said. "When it happened, her eyes were so big."
Annie's siblings, classmates, teachers and family couldn't be happier for her. The determined seven-year-old is stopping here. She has big dreams of becoming an author, according to her teacher.
“This has given her a real sense of confidence,” he mother, Mary Ellen Clark said. “She is just proud to be her and as a parent, I’m just thrilled with that.”

The Dartz Aladeen, official ride of “The Dictator,” can be yours for just $500,000

Today we received the announcement of the Dartz Aladeen Edition Prombron, a gold-coated version of the real armored SUV from the Latvian customizer whose tastes know few bounds -- much like its new signature client, Sacha Baron Cohen's Admiral General Aladeen from the upcoming movie, "The Dictator." Here's how much it will cost to drive like the ruler of all Wadiya.
Dartz touts their armored SUVs as the world's most expensive, and with prices north of $1 million for the Monaco Red Edition, no one disputes that. Built in Latvia with custom armor, blast-proof windows and V8 engines of up to 400 hp, Dartz claims its vehicles can withstand hits from rocket-propelled grenades while swaddling passengers in luxury, although no one has recorded the outcome of such a test to date. Dartz's largest claim to fame so far involved a custom Prombron interior featuring leather from whale penises -- an option dropped after opposition and free publicity from Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Foundation.
That was before its embrace as the ride of choice for "The Dictator," whose release May 12 will bring the Dartz style to an audience that may not realize it's the most realistic part of the movie. Below, Dartz's newest customer announces the company will sell 10 copies of the Prombron tricked out as they appear on screen, at prices of $500,000 to $750,000 before any options for receiving love of a grateful public. We'll let General Aladeen's people explain below:

Diffrent Between Europ and Asia's Leader

This are the great leader of great nation .all the time they are simple .
But in Asia all the leader used to live rich life styli .But there people are leading like a beggar .
because of the corruption  of Asian leader .

Oh My God .Shazahn looks hot in bikini, says dad

While B-town beauties like Kareena and PC have donned the two-piece fearlessly, some lovelies still get cold feet when it comes to the bikini-act.

The latest being Shazahn Padamsee. Recently, while chatting with zoOm, she told us that she was in two minds when she was asked to don a bikini for Housefull 2. More than the skin-show, Shazahn was anxious about her parents' reaction.

She told us, "I just kept it low-key at home and didn't divulge any details. But, it was so aesthetically shot that my parents were surprised when they watched it." And the man, whose comments mattered the most, was daddy Alyque Padamsee. "After the movie, my father told me I looked very hot," she said. Well, did he comment in the acting area, Shazahn?

Good News .Warning benefit changes may see fewer free school meals

Plans to simplify the welfare system may mean thousands of England's poorest children lose their entitlement to free school meals, a charity has warned.
The meals are linked to low-income benefits that are among those merging into a single Universal Credit in 2013.
In a report, the Children's Society said ministers were considering an income cap for eligibility that could leave 120,000 families worse off.
The government said it was determined to ensure no needy child misses out.
The Children's Society estimated that it would cost £500m to extend free school meals to all families on Universal Credit.
It said ministers were instead considering limiting it to households with earnings below a certain level, thought to be about £145 a week.

The government has an unique opportunity to extend free school meals to all low-income working families”

The charity said that would create a benefit cliff-edge that could see 120,000 families worse off if they worked longer or earned more.
The government has said people should always better off in work than on welfare.
The Children's Society's campaign for childhood director, Elaine Hindal, said the introduction of a new system of entitlement was a chance to increase the availability of free school meals.
"The government has an unique opportunity to extend free school meals to all low-income working families, so that no child living in poverty misses out.
"This would be in line with the government's aim to make work pay by paving the way for many families to return to employment and help lift them out of poverty."
The Children's Society has launched a petition calling on the government to extend free school meals to all children living in poverty in England - including low-income working families - by October 2012.
Children are said to be living in poverty if they are in a household living on less than 60% of median household income after the deduction of housing costs.

India test launches Agni-V long-range missile

India has successfully launched a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile able to carry a nuclear warhead, officials say.
The locally-developed Agni-V missile was originally scheduled to launch on Wednesday in the eastern state of Orissa.
Officials had delayed the launch because of heavy lightning in the area.
The missile has a range of more than 5,000km (3,100 miles), within range of targets in China.
Analysts say the Agni (meaning "fire" in Hindi and Sanskrit) missile family is to be the cornerstone of India's missile-based nuclear deterrent.
The missiles are among the country's most sophisticated weapons.
In 2010, India successfully test-fired Agni-II, an intermediate-range ballistic missile with a range of more than 2,000km (1,250 miles).
The Agni-V missile was launched from Orissa's Wheeler Island at 0805 local time on Thursday.
"It was a perfect launch. It met all the test parameters and hit its pre-determined target," SP Das, director of the test range, told the BBC.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulated the scientists for the "successful launch" of the missile.
"Today's launch represents another milestone in our quest for our security, preparedness and to explore the frontiers of science," he said.
'Deterrent' The missile took about 20 minutes to hit its target somewhere near Indonesia in the Indian Ocean.
Defence analyst Rahul Bedi says a successful test flight of the Agni-V missile, which is capable of delivering a single 1.5-ton warhead deep inside nuclear rival China's territory, would strengthen India's nuclear deterrence once it comes into service by 2014-15.
It is 17.5m tall, solid-fuelled, has three stages and a launch weight of 50 tons. It has cost more than 2.5bn rupees ($480m; £307m) to develop.
Only China, Russia, France, the US and UK have such long-range missiles. Israel is thought to possess them.
"Agni-V is to meet our present-day threat perceptions, which are determined by our defence forces and other agencies," DRDO Ravi Gupta spokesman told AFP news agency ahead of the launch.
"This is a deterrent to avoid wars and it is not country-specific," he said.

Some one have no time to talk .New March Madness Food Traditions

The NCAA tournament comes but once a year, and instead of feasting on culinary treasures to celebrate the long-awaited four day weekend of basketball that kicks it off, we eat the same foods commonly associated with sports watching all year long. We settle for pizza and wings, get by on nachos and watered-down beer. It's supposed to be March Madness, yet we treat it like it's another Sunday in football season. There has to be an edible way to honor the brackets, something more than average bar food and delivery 'za.
I'm talking new traditions for your taste buds. And the answer is to re-purpose some of the items that we enjoy only once a year and tie them to the big dance. Think of the passion it takes to chase the McRib across the country or the springtime joy of Cadbury Creme Eggs and Peeps. Let's put that epicurean enthusiasm into what we eat while watching the tournament. Like the pot of black eyed peas eaten for good luck on New Year's Day, here are four other once a year foods that we can make part of new March Madness traditions

Bolt Declares He Wants 'Living Legend' Status

Granted records are made to be broken, but this would be magical.
Usain Bolt has plans to become "a living legend" during the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games. The 25-year-old Jamaican would like to add to his Olympic records in the 100- and 200-meter competitions.
Bolt tells the BBC Sport that "people are looking forward to me running 9.4, 19 seconds, anything that's amazing." He was referring to breaking his world records of 9.58 seconds for the 100-meter dash and 19.19 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
After taking home three gold medals in the 2008 Olympics, Bolt knows what he can get by outshining the competition again in 2012. "If I dominate the Olympics, I'll be a living legend. A living legend walking around. Sounds good," Bolt said.
By the way, Michael Phelps also told the BCC that he looks forward to London being a nice ending to his American swimming career. "This is the last chapter of my career as an athlete and I'm just hoping it goes the way I want. I'm trying to work as hard as I can to make sure it does," Phelps, a 14-time Olympic champion, said."

Three Secret Service personnel tied to Colombia prostitution scandal to leave agency

The Secret Service announced late Wednesday that three of its personnel connected to the Colombia prostitute scandal--two supervisors and one agent--will leave the agency while eight more remain under investigation.
The agency is carrying out a full probe into the incident, including lie detector tests and witness interviews in Colombia, the assistant director of the U.S. Secret Service Office of Government and Public Affairs, Paul Morrissey, said in a statement.
"Although the Secret Service's investigation into allegations of misconduct by its employees in Cartagena, Colombia, is in its early stages, and is still ongoing, three of the individuals involved will separate or are in the process of separating from the agency," said Morrissey, whose office is running the probe.
One supervisor was allowed to retire from the agency. Another "has been proposed for removal for cause," triggering a process in which that person can hire a lawyer and challenge the case against him. And one agent has resigned.
"The remaining eight employees continue to be on administrative leave. Their security clearances remain suspended," Morrissey said.
"The Secret Service continues to conduct a full, thorough and fair investigation, utilizing all investigative techniques available to our agency. This includes polygraph examinations, interviews with the employees involved, and witness interviews, to include interviews being conducted by our Office of Professional Responsibility in Cartagena, Colombia," he said.
"Since these allegations were first reported, the Secret Service has actively pursued this investigation, and has acted to ensure that appropriate disciplinary action is effected. We demand that all of our employees adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards and are committed to a full review of this matter," Morrissey said.
Meanwhile, ABC News' Jake Tapper obtained a letter from the Republican chairman and Democratic ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to Secret Service director Mark Sullivan warning that the agents, who allegedly brought prostitutes to their rooms at the Hotel Caribe, may have brought the escorts "into contact with sensitive security information." Congressmen Darrell Issa and Elijah Cummings also requested a range of details from the agency, including a determination as to whether the women involved were all over 18 years of age.
In their letter, Issa and Cummings bluntly told Sullivan that "your task is to restore the world's confidence in the U.S. Secret Service."
"Our nation's capacity to protect the President, the Vice President, and visiting foreign leaders, among others, is dependent on the character and judgment of the agents and officers of the U.S. Secret Service. The actions of at least 11 agents and officers in Colombia last week showed an alarming lack of both," the lawmakers wrote in the letter obtained by ABC.

India to test nuclear missile that can hit Beijing

NEW DELHI (AP) — India is planning to test launch a new nuclear-capable missile that for the first time would give it the capability of hitting the major Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai.
The government has hailed the Agni-V missile, with a range of 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles), as a major boost to its efforts to counter China's regional dominance and become an Asian power in its own right. The test launch was slated to come as early as Wednesday evening, but Indian media said a delay was likely because of poor weather conditions.
"It will be a quantum leap in India's strategic capability," said Ravi Gupta, spokesman for India's Defense Research and Development Organization, which built the missile.
China is far ahead of India in the missile race, with intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching anywhere in India. Currently, the longest-range Indian missile, the Agni-III, has a range of only 3,500 kilometers (2,100 miles) and falls short of many major Chinese cities.
India and China fought a war in 1962 and continue to nurse a border dispute. India has also been suspicious of Beijing's efforts to increase its influence in the Indian Ocean in recent years.
"While China doesn't really consider India any kind of a threat or any kind of a rival, India definitely doesn't think in the same way," said Rahul Bedi, a defense analyst in New Delhi.
India already has the capability of hitting anywhere inside archrival Pakistan, but has engaged in a splurge of defense spending in recent years to counter the perceived Chinese threat.
The Indian navy took command of a Russian nuclear submarine earlier this year, and India is expected to take delivery of a retrofitted Soviet-built aircraft carrier soon.
The new Agni, named for the Hindi word for fire, is part of this military buildup and was designed to hit deep inside China, Bedi said.
Government officials said the missile should not be seen as a threat.
"We have a declared no-first-use policy, and all our missile systems, they are not country specific. There is no threat to anybody," Gupta said. "Our missile systems are purely for deterrence and to meet our security needs."
The launch window for the missile test, which is being conducted on Wheeler Island off India's east coast, opened Wednesday evening and closes Friday, Gupta said.
The Agni-V is a solid-fuel, three-stage missile designed to carry a 1.5-ton nuclear warhead. It stands 17.5 meters (57 feet) tall, has a launch weight of 50 tons and was built at a reported cost of 25 billion rupees ($486 million). It can be moved across the country by road or rail.
"Agni-V is a game-changer and a technological marvel," V.K. Saraswat, scientific adviser to the defense minister, was quoted as telling The Hindu newspaper.
The missile could also be used to carry multiple warheads or to launch satellites into orbit.
The planned test comes days after North Korea's failed long-range rocket launch. North Korea said the rocket was launched to put a satellite into space, but the U.S. and other countries said it was a cover for testing long-range missile technology.
One Delhi-based Western diplomat dismissed comparisons with the international condemnation of North Korea's launch, saying that Pyongyang was violating U.N. Security Council resolutions requiring it to suspend its missile program, while India is not considered a global threat. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment on India's security affairs.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the United States urges all nuclear-capable states to exercise restraint regarding nuclear capabilities.
"That said, India has a solid non-proliferation record," he told a news briefing. "They're engaged with the international community on non-proliferation issues."
Even if India's test is deemed a success, the missile will need four or five more trials before it can be inducted into India's arsenal at some point in 2014 or 2015, Bedi said.
Some reports characterized the Agni-V as an intercontinental ballistic missile — which would make India one of the few countries to have that capability — but Gupta and analysts said its range fell short of that category.
India has no need for such sophisticated weapons, said Rajaram Nagappa, a missile expert and the head of the International Strategic and Security Studies Program at the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Bangalore.
"I don't think our threat perceptions are anything beyond this region," he said.

Olympic host London is ready for the world

Most Olympic preparations are beset with a variety of pitfalls and setbacks – Rio de Janeiro is already said to be well behind in its planning for 2016 – and while London has not been totally free of difficulty, all problems have been dealt with without too much fuss.
One hundred days is nothing more than a statistic. And the significance of this week and the impending announcement of the latest Olympic slogan will be little more than a symbolic reminder that the time when the greatest athletes in the world converge on one city is nearly here. The message from London – its organizers, citizens and administrators – is simple.
"We are ready," said Lord Sebastian Coe, two-time Olympic 1500-meters gold medalist and chief of London's organizing committee. "It is thanks to some remarkable people and their work ethic. The last time I saw that kind of focus was the group I had around me in my athletics career."
[ 100 days to go: Key dates before the Summer Games begin in London ]
London had a lot to live up to after the previous Summer Olympics in Beijing, where the lavish spending of the Chinese government created an extraordinary visual spectacle and a master class in organization excellence. London's venues do not have the decorative splendor of the Bird's Nest or Water Cube, but they are up, finished and have generally avoided scathing judgment, even from the notoriously skeptical British media.
When London was awarded the Games on a night of intrigue and drama in Singapore in 2005, when politicians and sports figures like David Beckham danced and celebrated, there was general delight from the British public, especially when those sorry French faces from the failed Paris bid were shown on television. But there were real concerns that the main stadiums could turn into a major problem.
England's sorry reputation in regards to sports stadium construction was primarily thanks to the debacle over Wembley Stadium, the home of the England national soccer team, which was four years behind schedule and hundreds of millions of pounds over budget. The Olympic Park, however, has been relatively trouble-free with the main stadium not only delivered on time but likely to see future positive use as the home stadium of one of the city's many major soccer teams

3 in Scandal Being Forced Out of Secret Service, Officials Say

The agency has begun proceedings to fire one supervisor, and another has decided to retire, it said in a written statement. Another employee has resigned, and eight others remain under investigation.
“These guys have the clearest cases,” said a government official briefed on the investigation, referring to the three who are being pushed out.
The supervisor whom the Secret Service has begun proceedings to fire has threatened to sue the agency, the person said.
In its statement, the Secret Service said that it was “utilizing all investigative techniques available,” including polygraph examinations, and that investigators were interviewing agency employees and witnesses in Colombia.
Only one of the people under investigation has agreed to take the lie detector test, the government official said.
Among the people investigators for the Secret Service have interviewed are the maids who cleaned the rooms of the personnel during their stay, according to a Congressional staffer briefed on the investigation, who said that despite published reports, the maids said they had found no drug paraphernalia.
The Congressional staffer and government official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they did not want to jeopardize their access to sensitive information.
On Wednesday, Representative Peter T. King, the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, praised the director of the Secret Service, Mark J. Sullivan, for moving swiftly with the investigation.
“I fully support what Mark is doing,” said Mr. King, a Republican from New York. “I talked to him yesterday and today, and I know that he wanted to take strong action once he had a legal basis. This is firm, decisive leadership. He has told me from the start that he would take firm action as soon as he could.”
The Secret Service has also expanded its internal investigation into whether there was misconduct on other trips. So far, investigators have not uncovered anything similar to what apparently happened in Colombia.
The Secret Service opened an investigation into the alleged misconduct after officials learned that there had been a dispute between a prostitute and a Secret Service agent over money and that other personnel may have been involved with prostitutes. High-ranking agency officials ordered 11 individuals to return to the United States, where they have faced questioning.
On Capitol Hill, Representative Darrell Issa, the chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, continued his criticism of the Secret Service.
In a letter to Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Issa, a Republican from California, and the ranking Democrat on the committee, Representative Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland, said the Secret Service personnel in Colombia had brought “foreign nationals into contact with sensitive security information” and were potentially exposed to “blackmail and other forms of potential compromise.”
Mr. Issa and Mr. Cummings listed 10 requests for information that they wanted answered by May 1.
“Your swift and decisive action in response to this scandal has given us confidence that the agency will complete a thorough investigation and take steps to ensure that similar lapses in judgment will never again jeopardize the important work of the U.S. Secret Service,” the representatives said.

Girl in Pulitzer-winning picture still has nightmares

Down a rutted dirt alley in Old Kabul, the "Girl in the green dress" -- the subject of AFP's Pulitzer-winning photograph -- still has nightmares about the day a suicide bomber made her image world famous.
Tarana Akbari, 11, no longer wears her best dress, which was drenched in her own blood and that of her relatives who were among 70 people who died around her at a religious festival on December 6 last year.
AFP photographer Massoud Hossaini, 30, won the prestigious US journalism prize for his "heartbreaking image of a girl crying in fear after a suicide bomber's attack at a crowded shrine in Kabul," the Pulitzer committee said.
Tarana still cries sometimes when she remembers that day, but she managed an occasional shy smile in an interview with AFP at her modest home on Tuesday, as she cuddled her sisters, who were both wounded in the blast.
That her picture has been featured on newspaper front pages around the world means little to her, she says, with a small shrug and a fleeting smile.
But when she first saw the searing image she wondered: "How come I am alive. I can see all the dead bodies around me but only I survived."
She is still frightened at times, and that bloody day still haunts her, awake or asleep, but she says she is getting better.
One of the two spartan rooms that Tarana shares with her family of seven has a television in a corner, but what she sees there does not always help her recovery.
Last Sunday, squads of Taliban suicide bombers infiltrated the capital and unleashed gunfire and explosions in an 18-hour assault before all being killed by security forces.
"It made me frightened again," she said. "I am not happy, because that day when the bomb went off destroyed my family."
Of the bomber and those who sent him on his mission, she says only: "They did a bad thing. They should not have done it."
Her unemployed father, Ahmad, 35, lifts the shirt of Tarana's four-year-old sister to show horrific scars covering her entire stomach from the shrapnel that ripped through the celebrating crowd.
Out of 17 women and children from her extended family who went to a riverside shrine near her home that day to mark the Shiite holy day of Ashura, seven died, including her seven-year-old brother Shoaib.
Tarana herself has scars on her legs and arms and walks with a limp. She no longer attends school because her legs hurt, she says, adding: "I hope I can get well soon and go back to school."
Asked about her hopes for the future, the sweet smile makes an appearance and she says she would like to be a teacher, with the local language Dari being her favourite subject.
She spends her days playing with her sisters in the ramshackle house and in the dirt courtyard outside which leads to an alley where huddled young men openly inject heroin against crumbling mud walls.
Behind those walls, the "Girl in the green dress" nurses her pain and her fears, now dressed in a plain, baggy, shalwar khameez hiding the scars from the day her life was torn apart

All ship are going to sink

The eye-catching attraction — and eyesore — is the capsized Costa Concordia, all 591 feet of it lying just outside the entrance to the port, an ever-present reminder of the disaster that took 32 lives three months ago.
The question for most people on this tourism-dependent island, which attracted 23,000 visitors last year, is whether the wreck will be good for business or bad. The answer will not be known for several months, but from early indications, it seems to be both. Early bookings for lodging show a 20 percent drop for the summer season, while day trips seem to be up considerably, though there is no official count.
“We live in total uncertainty this year,” said Paolo Fanciulli, owner of the Bahamas hotel in Giglio Porto. On the night of the accident, hundreds of passengers found refuge at the hotel, along with one contentious guest: the ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, who is now under house arrest near Naples, accused of manslaughter, abandoning ship and causing a shipwreck.
“Bookings for the summer season are slow,” Mr. Fanciulli said. “We get e-mails from all over the world asking us about the relic, but these people do not make reservations. At first, some of us thought that this unexpected fame would have brought many tourists over, but for now curiosity has been only a one-day phenomenon.”
News reports beamed around the world after the cruise ship hit a submerged rock with 4,229 people aboard engendered misimpressions that are still lingering, tourism officials say. Even though salvage experts pumped out the vessel’s 500,000 gallons of fuel oil, many tourists seem to be concerned about the threat of pollution, and officials say people are also afraid of running into hundreds of emergency workers and officials, though only a few dozen remain.
Despite efforts to allay those fears, the only tourists who have shown increased interest in visiting the island are the day-trippers who come to be photographed with the half-sunken ship in the background. One of them, Virginie Breton, a 34-year-old Frenchwoman, decided during a long tour through Italy to stop there for a day. “It’s a bit weird, but don’t people go see the site of the World Trade Center?” she said. “Coming here is the same thing. This is part of history.”
As the ferry approached the Giglio harbor recently, passing right by the 114,500-ton luxury liner, Ms. Breton stood on a bench on the deck to get a better look. Other passengers leaned over the side with their iPhones or throwaway cameras, while others made the sign of the cross.
“We really just came to make the kids happy,” Debora Vano, 35, said while her two boys, 8 and 13, trotted around the deck to find the best angle to take a photograph of the ship, a souvenir to show their school friends in Milan. “We wanted to go to the thermal baths or to Pitigliano, but the kids wanted to see the ship.”
On a walkway near the rocks that affords the closest vantage point to the vessel, a steady stream of people with backpacks marched between the souvenir shops and the seafood restaurants. Few souvenir vendors have complained about that, but other people have.
“For now, the crowds of journalists and rescuers have helped our economy more than the one-day tourists,” said Rosalba Brizzi, 50, the manager of Bar Fausto, which sells items like sandwiches, espresso and ice cream. Day-trippers “do not buy much, and this year they have even less money to spend because of the crisis.”
One of the visitors, Marcelo Giorgetti, 49, a plumber from Grosseto, said, “We’ve been to Giglio before, but we came to see the monster this time.” He was lying on the smooth granite rocks facing the wreck with his wife, his sister and a couple of friends. “I keep on thinking that there might still be more bodies buried in there,” he said.
In the weeks after the accident, 17 bodies were recovered, and 13 more have been retrieved in the intervening months; the remains of five were identified on Tuesday. Two passengers are still unaccounted for and are presumed dead.
Some Giglio residents remain optimistic about the coming months, like the president of the local tourism bureau, Samantha Brizzi. She thinks that Giglio should find ways to take advantage of the period until the Costa Concordia is removed, which is expected to happen next year.
The tourism bureau is planning to enhance its holiday packages, adding stays and weekends over the winter — a potential revolution on an island that loses more than 500 of its almost 1,500 residents from November to Easter.
“We should take this as an opportunity,” she said. “After all, not even Coca-Cola could have afforded such worldwide publicity.”
Others remain skeptical. “I am very worried, even if the situation is more reassuring than it was in January,” said Fabio Mattera, the manager of Da Meino, one of the oldest restaurants in Giglio Porto. “I really can’t wait for October to come. We will then see if my business sinks like the Concordia.”

Sleepy Air Canada pilot thought Venus was a plane

A sleepy Air Canada pilot first mistook the planet Venus for an aircraft, and then sent his airliner diving toward the Atlantic to prevent an imaginary collision with another plane, an official report said on Monday.
Sixteen passengers and crew were hurt in the January 2011 incident, when the first officer rammed the control stick forward to avoid a U.S. plane he wrongly thought was heading straight toward him.
"Under the effects of significant sleep inertia (when performance and situational awareness are degraded immediately after waking up), the first officer perceived the oncoming aircraft as being on a collision course and began a descent to avoid it," Canada's Transportation Safety Board said.
"This occurrence underscores the challenge of managing fatigue on the flight deck," said chief investigator Jon Lee.
The incident occurred at night on board a Boeing 767 twin engine passenger plane flying from Toronto to Zurich in Switzerland with 95 passengers and eight crew.

The mystery of Mike Tyson's

The mystery of Mike Tyson's smile was quietly revealed by his wife in an article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal that details their relationship. One of the biggest questions: What happened to that famous gold front tooth used to chew into Evander Holyfield's ear?
Would you believe a Tiger is to blame for it being gone, and we aren't talking about the golfer?
Kiki Tyson told the Review-Journal that Tyson lost his famous tooth "when his tiger, Kenya, head-butted him."
Well, all right, then.
While their marriage couldn't save the tooth, it's been a positive in many other ways. After a rough past, the former heavyweight champion of the world took another chance at love and it helped lead to the magical rebirth of his career.
Tyson is arguably as popular today as he was back in his boxing heyday in the late 1980s. A big part of that success can be traced back to his wife, Kiki. She worked with her husband and director Randy Johnson in putting together what has become Iron Mike's one-man show, "Undisputed Truth," at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Secret Service of Obama

CARTAGENA, Colombia - ABC News has learned exclusively that the Secret Service officials accused of misconduct in Colombia revealed their identities by boasting at a Cartagena brothel that they worked for President Obama.
Partying at the "Pley Club" Wednesday night, eleven members of the president's advance team allegedly bragged "we work for Obama" and "we're here to protect him."
The officials spent the night throwing back expensive whiskey and enlisting the services of the club's prostitutes, according to a bouncer at the club and a police source.
Sources tell ABC News several of the men agreed to pay for, and received, services from the "highest category" prostitutes available at the club, who charge upwards of $200.
The men paid for the sexual services in advance but when it came time to settle the bill, there was a dispute over the charges.
The group became belligerent and the police were called. The argument between the officials and the bouncers from the club escalated and ultimately spilled onto the street, according to several eye witness accounts.
The police have since been directed by U.S. authorities not to comment on that night or the scandal surrounding the Secret Service, according to a senior police official in Cartagena.
Prostitution is legal in Colombia and the women who work at the Pley Club live on the premises.
The club, located on a dusty street in the industrial Bosque neighborhood, just blocks from the port, has a rough exterior but boasts plush "pley rooms" inside.
The Pley Club is a well-known brothel in this historic city. Some taxi drivers in the resort-town are paid a commission for recommending the club and its prostitutes to tourists.
The officials were in Cartagena on assignment ahead of the president's visit for the Summit of the Americas last weekend.
The controversy surrounding the officials' misconduct, however, overshadowed the summit last week and local residents are questioning why the city put so many resources into the international event only to be left with a tarnished reputation.
"Cartagena didn't benefit one cent from President Obama's visit. All people remember are that the Secret Service agents slept with our prostitutes," said a man who works in the neighborhood.

The Secret Service prostitution scandal: A 'pattern of behavior'?

What happened exactly?
The 11 agents reportedly brought prostitutes back to the hotel last Wednesday night. The women registered at the front desk, as required by local custom, but one of them failed to leave by 7 a.m., the accepted departure time. A hotel employee went up to the room to find the find the agent and a prostitute locked in a quarrel over whether he had paid her. The agent forked over the cash, but the Cartagenan police were called and the U.S. embassy was subsequently informed, leading to the 11 agents' recall.
Was there anyone else involved?
It looks like it. The Pentagon says five military personnel stationed in Colombia are currently under investigation for their possible role in the affair, and a department spokesman says even more men may be involved.
Does the Secret Service agents' behavior reflect a larger problem?
Possibly. "Wheels up, rings off" is a "running joke" among Secret Service personnel heading for foreign assignments, meaning their wedding rings get slipped into pockets as soon as their planes take off, say Laura Meckler and Keith Johnson at The Wall Street Journal. Issa says "wheels up parties" are not uncommon, but that agents typically wait until the president is on a plane returning to the States. These 11 agents had a "pre-wheels down party" before Obama arrived, which "clearly compromised the ring of security."
How did President Obama react?
Obama says he will be "angry" if the allegations prove true. "My attitude with respect to Secret Service personnel is no different than what I expect out of my delegation sitting here. We represent the United States. When we travel to another country, I expect them to observe the highest standards because we're not just representing ourselves." The scandal largely overshadowed Obama's business in Colombia, where he attended a regional summit and finalized a Colombian trade pact.
What action is the government taking?
The White House is conducting a "thorough" and "rigorous" investigation into the incident, Obama says. Issa and other lawmakers say they might hold hearings on the scandal, as a way to shine a spotlight on the Secret Service's broader behavior. "We clearly have lost confidence" in the agency, which could be prone to blackmail and other security breaches, Issa said.
What are others saying?
The scandal is "outright tacky," and has turned the Secret Service into a "farce," says Amy Davison at The New Yorker. "It's a national embarrassment" that calls for an "agency-wide cleanup," says The Wall Street Journal in an editorial.

10 Best Cities for Singles

Finding the best cities for singles goes beyond simply identifying the places with the highest percentage of bachelors and bachelorettes. Financial factors count, too. After all, you’ll want to meet someone who can afford to date, right?

To put together our list of best cities for singles, we took into account income and living costs. The cities that made the final cut boast household income levels well above the Census Bureau average of $49,536. The cost-of-living scorederived from Council for Community and Economic Research dataindicates essential costs, including rent. A high score is acceptable as long as it’s offset by attractive incomes and a strong dating pool.

We screened cities based on the percentage of unmarried households because many otherwise great places to live are heavily populated by happily wedded couples, not swinging singles. We limited our list to cities with unmarried households comfortably above the average of 49.4%.

Finally, we added what we dubbed a date-night tab: the average cost of two movie tickets plus a bottle of wine. Use the amount to budget for your next night out. Take a tour of our top-10 cities for singles.

Iowa City boasts the highest share of singles on our list. Attribute that statistic to the sprawling University of Iowa, which enrolls nearly 31,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. But a strong economy and pleasant lifestyle draw newcomers to Iowa City, as well: Pearson, Oral B and Procter & Gamble all operate facilities in the area, income growth is a solid 3.8%, and unemployment is 4.3%. Moderate midwestern living costs mean that both residing and dating in Iowa City are comfortably cheap.

A killar is acting like hero of the nation .

With a defiant closed-fist salute, a right-wing fanatic admitted Monday to a bomb-and-shooting massacre that killed 77 people in Norway but pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, saying he was acting in self-defense.
On the first day of his long-awaited trial, Anders Behring Breivik rejected the authority of the court as it sought to assign responsibility for the July 22 attacks, which shocked Norway and jolted the image of terrorism in Europe.
Dressed in a dark suit and sporting a thin beard, Mr. Breivik smiled as a guard removed his handcuffs in the crowded courtroom. The 33-year-old then flashed his salute before shaking hands with prosecutors and court officials.
“I don’t recognize Norwegian courts because you get your mandate from the Norwegian political parties who support multiculturalism,” Mr. Breivik said in his first comments to the court.
Eight people were killed in Mr. Breivik’s bombing of Oslo's government district, and 69 were slain in his shooting massacre at the left-leaning Labor Party’s youth camp on Utoya island outside the capital. Mr. Breivik has said the attacks were necessary to protect Norway from being taken over by Muslims.
“I admit to the acts, but not criminal guilt,” he told the court, insisting he had acted in self-defense.
The key issue to be resolved during the 10-week trial is the state of Mr.  Breivik’s mental health, which will decide whether he is sent to prison or into psychiatric care. Anxious to prove he is not insane, Mr. Breivik will call right-wing extremists and radical Islamists to testify during the trial, to show that others also share his view of clashing civilizations.
Norway‘s NRK television was broadcasting parts of the trial live but was not allowed to show Mr. Breivik’s testimony.
During Monday’s opening session, he remained stone-faced and motionless as prosecutors read the indictment on the terror and murder charges, with descriptions of how each victim died, and when prosecutors explained how he prepared for the attacks.
But Mr. Breivik suddenly became emotional when prosecutors showed an anti-Muslim video that he had posted on YouTube before the killing spree, wiping away tears on his cheek with trembling hands.
After a lunch break, Mr. Breivik was again expressionless as he watched prosecutors present surveillance footage of the Oslo explosion. The blast ripped through a high-rise building that housed government offices, blowing out windows and filling surrounding streets with smoke and debris.
He didn’t flinch as prosecutors played a three-minute recording of a young woman’s frantic phone call to police from Utoya.
“Shots have been fired,” Renate Taarnes, 22, said with panic in her voice. “I’m pretty sure that there are many injured.”
More than a dozen shots in close succession could be heard as Ms. Taarnes fell silent.
“Are you still there?” the police officer asked.
