How far would you go to save a co-worker?Man jumps into vat of acid to save co-worker

A roofer in New Jersey reportedly jumped into a vat of nitric acid on Monday to save a co-worker who had fallen in.

Martin Davis was working at Swepco Tube LLC, a metal tube manufacturing plant in Clifton, N.J., when he fell 40 feet into the tank of acid and became full submerged, fire officials said.

Clifton Fire Chief Vincent Colavitti Jr. told the Record that a fellow roofer, 51-year-old Rob Nuckols, jumped into the vat waist-high to pull Davis, 44, out. Three other workers helped Nuckols pluck Davis from the acid, which is used to clean metal tubing.

Rescue workers "cut Davis out of his clothes and sprayed him with water to limit burns," Colavitti told the paper.

Davis suffered "a broken rib, punctured lung, and burns on his legs and side" and is in critical condition, according to the Associated Press. Nuckols was also treated for burns.

Secret Service Escort Says US Agents 'Showed No Respect'

One of the Colombian escorts at the center of the Secret Service scandal emerged from hiding today, recounting in detail her night in Cartagena with a member of President Obama's protective detail and saying she fears for her safety.

Dania Suarez, a 24-year old dark-haired beauty, appeared on a call-in show carried by Colombia's W Radio and Carocol Television Friday morning, telling callers the agent was "heavily intoxicated" and everything in his luggage and his papers was left open in his room and could have been easily stolen.

Asked if she had been a spy could she have removed the papers, Suarez said, "Absolutely, absolutely."

"Clearly, in those moments, if I had wanted to, obviously, I could have done so," she said.

Suarez says she met the agent at a disco where they danced and she began to rub her hands over his body.

"He didn't know how to dance," she said of the agent, identified in published accounts elsewhere as Arthur Huntington, who has left the Secret Service under circumstances that are unclear.
She said that Huntington did not appear to be searching for a prostitute but that "I found him."
Suarez said Huntington fell asleep when they returned to his room and refused to answer the question of whether they actually had sex.
"If I answer this you will know what happened," she said.
Suarez said the agent "did not feel he got what he was being asked to pay for" and that this led to dispute over how much he owed her at the end of the evening.

She said she does not consider herself a prostitute, but an escort because prostitutes "are lower class and live in brothels."

She confirmed other accounts that the agent offered her $30, which led to a confrontation at the agent's door which drew the attention of the hotel manager and local police.
She said the agents pleaded, "Please, please no police, no police."
"Between all of them, they collected the money, $250, and that's what happened in the hall," she said. "They were part of Obama's security group and I told them I was going to call the police so they can pay me the money."

Suarez said she left Colombia for a few days because of concerns her life could be in danger and has had no contact with any American official.

"Maybe they are just as dumb as the Secret Service agents," she told the station.

Throughout her appearance this morning, dressed in a skimpy green blouse, Suarez laughed and smiled even as the host reminded her of the seriousness of the scandal.

জাতীয় পার্টির চেয়ারম্যান হুসেইন মুহম্মদ এরশাদ বলেছেন, বাড়িতে থাকলে খুন আর রাস্তায় থাকলে গুম। এভাবে দেশকে চলতে দেওয়া যায় না।

শনিবার দুপুরে মুন্সীগঞ্জের সিরাজদিখান উপজেলার ইছাপুরার পথসভায় প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে তিনি এ কথা বলেন।

তিনি উপস্থিত জনতার উদ্দেশে বলেন, আপনারা নিশ্চই ভাল নেই। এই দুই দলের প্রতিহিংসার রাজনীতিতে দেশ আজ ধ্বংসের দ্বারপ্রান্তে।

তিনি বলেন, আজ যারা দেশে হরতাল দিয়ে দেশের ক্ষতি করছে তারা কি ক্ষমতায় গেলে দেশ ভাল চলবে? এবং যারা ক্ষমতায় আছে তারাও দেশ ভাল চালাতে পারছে না।

তিনি বলেন, বিএনপি হরতাল দিয়ে দেশের এইচএসসি পরীক্ষা বন্ধ করে দিয়েছে। এত শিক্ষার্থীদের ব্যাপক ক্ষতি হচ্ছে। এদের ক্ষমতায় আনা যাবে না।

তিনি বলেন, আমি ক্ষমতা ছেড়ে দেওয়ার পর দেশের কোনো উন্নয়ন হয়নি। হয়েছে লুটপাট, সন্ত্রাস আর চাঁদাবাজি। এ থেকে মুক্তি পেতে জাতীয় পার্টিতে আবার ক্ষমতায় আনতে হবে।

আমার ভয়ে রাষ্ট্রপতি শাষিত সরকার ব্যবস্থা বাতিল করা হয়েছে। আর দেশে যে গণতন্ত্র চালু ক‍রা হয়েছে এই গণতন্ত্র দেশের মানুষ চায়না।

মুন্সীগঞ্জ-২ (সিরাজদিখান-শ্রীনগর) আসনে জাতীয় পার্টির প্রেসিডিয়াম সদস্য শেখ মো. সিরাজুল ইসলামকে আগামীতে জাতীয় পার্টির প্রার্থী পরিচয় করিয়ে দিয়ে বলেন, হারানো আসনটি আমরা আবার ফিরে পেতে চাই। দেশের উন্নয়নের জন্য আপনাদের পাশে পেতে চাই।

সিরাজদিখান উপজেলার জাতীয় পার্টির সভাপতি আব্দুল লতিফ হাওলাদারের সভাপতিত্বে বিশেষে অতিথির বক্তব্য রাখেন, জাতীয় পার্টির মহাসচিব এবিএম রুহুল আমিন হাওলাদার, জাতীয় পার্টির কোষাধ্যক্ষ মেজর (অব.) খালেদ আখতার, ছাত্র সমাজের আহ্বায়ক সৈয়দ মিজানুর রহমান হিমু প্রমুখ।

His cabinet is packed with almost every major title in club football (13 out of a possible 19 in four years), but it's the quality of the attacking, aesthetically-pleasing football that flowered at Barcelona under his tutelage that will forever define Pep Guardiola.

It was a dream run that led to many aficionados arguing that this was the greatest team of all time. But on Friday, it ended with a speed that left the world gasping.

Guardiola, like so many hip, urban 40-somethings the world over are doing, stepped out of the way before burnout consumed him.

Despite creating one of the most beautiful ideas in world sport in recent memory, he himself called time on the all-conquering cycle, showing that there's often a high price to pay for beauty.

"It's been football, football, football but in life there are other things," the young visionary said, announcing his decision on Friday not to continue as the team's senior coach.

And as clubs around the world - Chelsea and Manchester City no doubt among them - scrambled for the phone to sound off his agent, Guardiola made his intentions clear.

"At some point I will return to management but right now I have no interest in another job," he said as most of his team - captain Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez, Victor Valdez, Andres Iniesta - sat among the rest in a packed press conference that was beamed live across the world.

"Talking to you and players for four years is very demanding," he said, clearly indicating his fatigue and exhaustion.

Many in the football world will debate the timing of Guardioala's decision. By their high standards, Barca have underperformed this season.

His presence could have helped lift the team's morale. But making clear that the famed philosophy of attacking football that prospered under Guardiola will not be discarded, the club was quick to anoint Tito Vilanova, his faithful No. 2, as coach for the coming season.

At Barca, it is clear that the model is bigger than the name.

Constant search of beauty took its toll

Earlier this week, as Barcelona trudged back in at the halftime break during the Champions League semifinal second leg, stunned by a shock Ramires goal, an audacious chip on the run, the world really wanted to see how rejuvenated they would be when they returned.

And crucially then, in the quarter of an hour that Pep Guardiola had, try to figure out what the Barca coach would have told his team.

By Barcelona's lofty standards, it was a season gone awry. Now, this was the final half where a season could be salvaged. The team that emerged continued to play the game like they had always done under their young, gone-bald manager. Nothing had changed - high possession was retained, an arrogant high line of defence maintained and the intricate, maze of passing continued. Yet nothing seemed the same. For those used to watching this team closely, it was immediately clear something was amiss.

Sometimes the most interesting part of observing Guardiola's model, ever since he replaced the equally-fatigued Frank Rijkaard in May 2008, was to assess how he kept his all-conquering team hungry with each passing season. Doesn't it exhaust you, doesn't it drain you?

Is it possible that you can get bored of it? As the team discarded all previous tenets of football, all forms of rigidity to create something entirely new and wondrous, it never seemed an issue.

But creating beauty takes an extreme toll. Guardiola's is an obsessive personality. On Friday, he spoke of the loss of feeling and drive.

"I need to recover the feeling that I had when I first started. I just don't feel the same," he said.

Losing weight, losing hair since he first took the Barcelona sidelines, shouting instructions, making those trademark wild, puppet string gestures which only his team understood and which befuddled the opposition even further, Guardiola - football's great young thinker - also showed on Friday that there's more to him than just his fantastic genius of football.

অবসরটা সবাই নিজের মতো কাটায়। কেউ গান শোনে, কেউ বাগান করে। সুবীর বিশ্বাস অবসর কাটান শিশুদের পড়িয়ে। তা-ও বিনে পয়সায়। বিদ্যালয় থেকে ঝরে পড়া ও গরিব ঘরের শিশুরা তাঁর ছাত্র। মাথার ওপর ছাউনি নেই। নেই বেঞ্চ, চেয়ার-টেবিল। আছেন শুধু সুবীর। তাঁর টানেই ছুটে আসে শিশুরা। বিদ্যালয়ে না গেলেও পাঠশালায় তারা হাজির হয় ঠিকঠাক।
স্থানীয়দের কাছে এটি ‘গাছতলার পাঠশালা’ নামে পরিচিত। এখানে লেখাপড়ার পাশাপাশি শিশুদের সৃজনশীল কাজে অনুপ্রেরণা দেন সুবীর। জন্ম থেকেই তাঁর পা দুটি স্বাভাবিক নয়। হাত দুটি থেকেও না থাকার মতো। শারীরিক এই প্রতিবন্ধকতা ডিঙিয়ে নিজে পড়ছেন, শিক্ষার আলোয় আলোকিত করছেন অন্যদেরও। নয় বছর আগে এই পাঠশালার যাত্রা শুরু। ঝরে পড়া অনেক শিশু সুবীরের ছায়াতলে এসে এখন বিদ্যালয়মুখী।
পাঠশালায় ছাত্রছাত্রী ৪৫ জন। এরা সবাই আশপাশের সরকারি ও বেসরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থী। বিদ্যালয় ছুটির পর বিকেলে তারা পাঠশালায় আসে। শুক্রবার বাদে সপ্তাহের ছয় দিন বেলা তিনটা থেকে পাঁচটা পর্যন্ত পড়ানো হয় এখানে। শিক্ষার্থীরা কেউ পাঠশালার পড়ায় ফাঁকি দেয় না। সুবীর আদর করে তাদের চকলেট খাওয়ান। অভিভাবকেরাও ছেলেমেয়েদের খোঁজখবর নেন।
এই পাঠশালায় শিক্ষার্থীদের শরীরচর্চা, খেলাধুলা, বাবা-মায়ের প্রতি কর্তব্য, পরিষ্কার-পরিচ্ছন্নতা ও ছবি আঁকা বিষয়ে হাতে-কলমে শিক্ষা দেন সুবীর। মাস শেষে নেন মূল্যায়ন পরীক্ষা।
সুবীরের বেড়ে ওঠা: বয়স তাঁর ২২। বাড়ি সুনামগঞ্জের শাল্লা উপজেলার অবদা গ্রামে। পাঁচ বোন ও এক ভাইয়ের সংসারে তিনি চতুর্থ। বাবা বারীন্দ্র বিশ্বাস খেটে খাওয়া মানুষ। শিশুকালে বন্ধুদের সঙ্গে বিদ্যালয়ে যাওয়ার বায়না ধরতেন সুবীর। কিন্তু ছেলে যে আর দশটা শিশুর মতো নয়! কী করে বিদ্যালয়ে যাবে সে? বাবা-মায়ের এই দুশ্চিন্তা হার মানে সুবীরের আগ্রহের কাছে। ছেলেকে বিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি করিয়ে দেন তাঁরা। ঘরে বসে লেখার চর্চা করে চলেন সুবীর। দুই হাতের মাঝে কলম চেপে লিখতে শেখেন।
অবদা সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয় থেকে পঞ্চম শ্রেণী পাস করেন। বাবার অভাবের সংসার। সুবীর চলে আসেন কিশোরগঞ্জের নিকলীতে। উপজেলার গুরুই ইউনিয়নের শিবিরপাড়া গ্রামে মামা সাধন বিশ্বাসের বাড়িতে ঠাঁই হয় তাঁর। মামা সুবীরকে স্থানীয় হিলচিয়া উচ্চবিদ্যালয়ে ষষ্ঠ শ্রেণীতে ভর্তি করে দেন। বাড়ি থেকে বিদ্যালয় এক কিলোমিটার দূরের পথ। এই পা নিয়ে বিদ্যালয়ে যেতে-আসতে উরু ফুলে যেত সুবীরের। তবু লেখাপড়া থামাননি।
এদিকে মামাদের নুন আনতে পান্তা ফুরায়। ভাগনের পড়ার খরচ চালাতে মামারা হিমশিম খাচ্ছিলেন। সেটা ২০০৩ সালের কথা। সুবীর তখন নবম শ্রেণীর ছাত্র। গৃহশিক্ষকের কাজ শুরু করেন। সপ্তম ও অষ্টম শ্রেণীর ছাত্রদের পড়াতেন। গৃহশিক্ষকতার টাকায় নিজের পড়ার খরচ হয়ে যেত। কিন্তু ভেতরে অন্য তাগিদ অনুভব করতেন সুবীর। চোখের সামনে দরিদ্র পরিবারের শিশুদের বিদ্যালয় থেকে ঝরে পড়া দেখে বড্ড মায়া হতো তাঁর। একদিন ওদের নিয়ে কাজে নেমে পড়লেন। ২০০৩ সাল থেকে শুরু, আজও পথচলা থামেনি।
নিজের পড়া, পাঠশালায় পড়ানোর পর গৃহশিক্ষকতা আজও ধরে রেখেছেন সুবীর। সন্ধ্যার পর বাড়িতে ১০ জন ছাত্রছাত্রী পড়ান। গৃহশিক্ষকতার সেই টাকায় পাঠশালার টুকটাক খরচাপাতি চলে।
‘অবসরটা ওদের দিলাম’: নিকলী সদর থেকে ১০ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণে শিবিরপাড়া গ্রাম। মামাবাড়ির উঠানে সুবীরের পাঠশালা। জায়গাটি ছায়াঘেরা। সম্প্রতি এক বিকেলে ওই পাঠশালায় গিয়ে দেখা গেল, জনা চল্লিশেক শিশু সিমেন্টের বস্তার ওপর বসে আছে। মাথা দুলিয়ে কেউ পড়ছে, কেউ লিখছে। মাঝ বরাবর ফাঁকা স্থানটিতে চশমাপরা সুবীর একবার এদিকে, একবার ওদিকে যাচ্ছেন। মাঝে থেমে থেমে কাউকে পড়া বুঝিয়ে দিচ্ছেন। কারোর মাথায় হাত বুলাচ্ছেন।
আগন্তুক দেখে এগিয়ে আসেন সুবীর। তিনি জানান তাঁর লক্ষ্য, উদ্দেশ্য এবং এই কাজে জড়িয়ে পড়ার গল্প। ‘নানা কারণে গ্রামের কিছু ছেলেমেয়ে স্কুলে যেতে চায় না। অনেকে পড়াশোনা থেকে ছিটকে পড়ে। আবার আর্থিক সামর্থ্য না থাকায় অনেক অভিভাবক তাঁদের সন্তানকে প্রাইভেট পড়াতে পারেন না। কিছু অভিভাবক নিজেরাও পড়ালেখা জানেন না। তাঁদের ছেলেমেয়েরা পড়ালেখায় খারাপ করছে। এসব সমস্যা আমাকে ভাবিয়ে তোলে। তাই সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছি, আমি যতটুকু জানি, অন্যের মধ্যে ছড়িয়ে দেব।’ বললেন সুবীর।
পড়ানোর বিনিময়ে টাকা নেন না কেন—এমন প্রশ্নের জবাবে সুবীর বলেন, ‘টাকা নেই না এই ভেবে, দুই ঘণ্টা আমি তাদের লেখাপাড়া করাই। এই দুই ঘণ্টা আমার কোনো কাজ থাকে না। তাই অবসর সময়টা না হয় ওদেরই দিলাম।’ ভবিষ্যতেও মানুষের মাঝে শিক্ষার আলো ছড়ানোর স্বপ্ন দেখেন তিনি।
ঝরে পড়াদের পড়াতে পড়াতে দুই-দুবার নিজেই ঝরতে বসেছিলেন, জানান সুবীর। ২০০৬ সালে মানবিক বিভাগে এসএসসি দিয়ে বি গ্রেডে পাস করেন। এসএসসি পরীক্ষার আগে ও পরে দুই বছর করে পড়াশোনায় বিরতি দেন। অভাবের জন্য চারটি বছর বিসর্জন দেওয়ায় আফসোসের অন্ত নেই তাঁর। ২০০৯ সালে বাজিতপুর ডিগ্রি কলেজে ভর্তি হন। সেখান থেকে চলতি বছর ব্যবসায় শিক্ষা থেকে এইচএসসি পরীক্ষা দিচ্ছেন।
সবার কাছে প্রিয়: পশ্চিম গুরুই বেসরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের পঞ্চম শ্রেণীর ছাত্রী নাছিমা আক্তার। সে প্রথম শ্রেণী থেকে এই পাঠশালায় পড়ছে। এখানে পড়তে খুব ভালো লাগে তার। একই বিদ্যালয়ের দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীর ছাত্র পার্থ রায় বলল, ‘কুনু দিন স্কুলে না গেলেও সুবীর স্যারের পাঠশালায় আসা বন্ধ করি না।’ তৃতীয় শ্রেণীর ছাত্র আসলাম মিয়া বলল, ‘এখানে শুধু লেহাপড়া করি না। রাস্তায় ক্যামনে চলতে হয়, বড়দের কীভাবে সম্মান করতে হয়, তা-ও শিখি।’
এই বিদ্যালয়ের সহকারী শিক্ষক হারুন মিয়া জানান, গত কয়েক বছরে তাঁদের বিদ্যালয় থেকে আনুমানিক ৩০ জন শিক্ষার্থী ঝরে পড়ে। সুবীরের পাঠশালায় পড়ার পর তারা পুনরায় বিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি হয়েছে। তাদের কেউ এখন দ্বিতীয়, কেউবা তৃতীয় শ্রেণীতে পড়ছে। একই বিদ্যালয়ের প্রধান শিক্ষক মোহাম্মদ আলী বলেন, ‘সুবীর ভাই-বোনের মমতা দিয়ে বাচ্চাদের লেখাপড়া শেখাচ্ছে। শিশুরা ওকে ছাড়া কিছু বোঝে না। অনেক ছাত্র স্কুলে না গেলেও তার পাঠশালায় ঠিকই যায়।’
গুরুই সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের প্রধান শিক্ষক লতিফা আক্তার জানান, সুবীরের গাছতলায় যারা লেখাপড়া করে, তারা বিদ্যালয়েও ভালো ফল করে।
একটি ঘর হলে ভালো হতো: স্থানীয় অভিভাবক দেলোয়ারা বেগম জানান, তাঁর ছেলে তাসলিম প্রথম শ্রেণীতে পড়ার পর আর স্কুলে যেত না। এলাকার ছেলেমেয়েদের সঙ্গে বিকেলে সুবীরের পাঠশালায় যাওয়া শুরু করে। এরপর পুনরায় বিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি হয়। এখন সে তৃতীয় শ্রেণীতে পড়ে।
গুরুই ইউনিয়ন পরিষদের (ইউপি) চেয়ারম্যান ফজলুল হক বলেন, ‘সুবীরের ঋণ শোধ করার নয়। ৪০-৪৫টি শিশুকে পড়িয়ে কোনো টাকা-পয়সা নেয় না ছেলেটা। তাকে বারবার টাকা দিতে চেয়েও কোনো অভিভাবক টাকা দিতে পারেননি।’
নিকলী উপজেলা নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা (ইউএনও) হাবিবুর রহমান বলেন, ‘পাঠশালাটি দেখতে গিয়ে শিক্ষা উপকরণ কেনার জন্য তাকে দুই হাজার টাকা দিয়েছি।’ সুবীরের পাঠশালার জন্য একটি ঘরের প্রয়োজনীয়তার কথা বলেন তিনি।

পুলিশের তেজগাঁও বিভাগের অতিরিক্ত উপকমিশনার মোহাম্মদ হারুন অর রশিদ ২০তম বিসিএস পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণদের মধ্যে মেধাতালিকায় ৮৭তম অবস্থানে আছেন। ৪৩ জনকে ডিঙিয়ে তিনি পেয়েছেন মানিকগঞ্জ জেলার পুলিশ সুপারের চলতি দায়িত্ব। তাঁর পরের ব্যক্তি পুলিশের মতিঝিল বিভাগের অতিরিক্ত উপকমিশনার মনিরুজ্জামান। ৪৪ জনকে ডিঙিয়ে তাঁকে লক্ষ্মীপুর জেলার পুলিশ সুপারের চলতি দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছে।
অভিযোগ উঠেছে, এভাবে অনিয়ম ও দলীয়করণের মাধ্যমে ৩৬ জন কর্মকর্তাকে অতিরিক্ত পুলিশ সুপার থেকে পুলিশ সুপারের চলতি দায়িত্বে পদায়ন করা হয়েছে। এসব কর্মকর্তার অনেকের বিরুদ্ধে দুর্নীতির অভিযোগও আছে। কেউ কেউ সাময়িক বরখাস্ত হন।
এখন চলতি দায়িত্বে নিয়োগ পাওয়া কর্মকর্তারা পরে পুলিশ সুপারের পদে স্থায়ী নিয়োগ পাবেন। এ কারণে এ ধরনের পদায়নকে পদোন্নতি হিসেবে ধরা হয়।
অভিযোগ আছে, হারুন অর রশিদ তেজগাঁও বিভাগের অতিরিক্ত উপকমিশনার থাকার সময় গত বছরের ৬ জুলাই সংসদে বিরোধীদলীয় চিফ হুইপ জয়নুল আবদিন ফারুককে মারধর করেছিলেন। এ ঘটনা ওই সময় গণমাধ্যমে ব্যাপক প্রচার পায়। ফারুককে মারধর করার ‘পুরস্কার’ হিসেবে ৪৩ জনকে ডিঙিয়ে হারুনকে এসপির পদ দেওয়া হয়েছে বলে পুলিশের মধ্যেই আলোচনা হচ্ছে।
পুলিশ সূত্র জানায়, বিরোধীদলীয় চিফ হুইপকে মারধরের ঘটনায় একটি তদন্ত কমিটি গঠন করা হয়েছিল। ঢাকা মহানগর পুলিশের অতিরিক্ত কমিশনার আবদুল জলিল এ কমিটির প্রধান। কিন্তু এ ব্যাপারে কোনো তদন্তই হয়নি। এ বিষয়ে কেউ মন্তব্যও করতে চাননি।
হারুন অর রশীদের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগের চেষ্টা করে তাঁকে পাওয়া যায়নি। পুলিশের কর্মকর্তারা জানান, কিছুদিন আগে তিনি যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে ফিরেছেন। তাঁর ফোন বন্ধ রয়েছে।
২২ এপ্রিল স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের এক আদেশে ৫৩ জন পুলিশ কর্মকর্তাকে বদলি ও নিয়োগের আদেশ দেয় স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়। এই তালিকায় ২০তম বিসিএস পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ কর্মকর্তা আছেন ৩৬ জন। তাঁদের পদায়নের ক্ষেত্রে অনিয়মের অভিযোগ উঠেছে। বলা হচ্ছে, দলীয় বিবেচনায় পছন্দের তালিকা ধরে পদায়ন করা হয়েছে।
পুলিশ সূত্র জানায়, এ নিয়ে এই ব্যাচের ১৭ জন কর্মকর্তা স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী ও স্বরাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রীর সঙ্গে দেখা করেছিলেন। তাঁরা হারুনসহ অনেকের পদোন্নতি নিয়ে আপত্তি তোলেন। পুলিশ কর্মকর্তারা স্বীকার করেন, অনিয়মের অভিযোগের কারণে পদোন্নতির তালিকাটি এক দফা প্রধানমন্ত্রীর কার্যালয় থেকে ফেরত পাঠানো হয়। এরপর দীর্ঘদিন এটি ঝুলে ছিল। পরে কয়েকজন কর্মকর্তা মন্ত্রী-প্রতিমন্ত্রীর বাড়ি বাড়ি ঘুরে নিজেদের পছন্দের নাম যুক্ত করেন।
পুলিশের মহাপরিদর্শক (আইজিপি) হাসান মাহমুদ খন্দকার প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ‘পদোন্নতি ও বদলি নিয়ে সব সময় অভিযোগ ওঠে। এটা নতুন কিছু নয়। পদোন্নতির জন্য একটি কমিটি আছে, সেই কমিটিই সব ঠিক করে। এবার কিছু কর্মকর্তা বাদ পড়েছেন, আগামীতে তাঁরা পদোন্নতি পাবেন। এতে কোনো অনিয়ম হয়নি।’
নাম প্রকাশে অনিচ্ছুক পুলিশের এক কর্মকর্তা প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, এবারের পদায়ন নিয়ে পুলিশ বিভাগে অসন্তোষ বিরাজ করছে। এর আগে এত অনিয়ম হয়নি। পদোন্নতি পাওয়া দুই কর্মকর্তা সম্প্রতি সরকারের ঘনিষ্ঠ বলে পরিচিত এক পুলিশ কর্মকর্তার কাছে যান। তাঁদের সঙ্গে পদোন্নতিবঞ্চিত এক কর্মকর্তাও ছিলেন। তাঁরা বলেন, ৩৬ জনকে পদায়ন করা হলেও মেধাতালিকায় চতুর্থ আনিছুর রহমান ও পঞ্চম বরকতুল্লাহ খানকে পদায়ন করা হয়নি। বরকতুল্লাহ বিগত সরকারের সময়ও বঞ্চিত ছিলেন। অভিযোগ শুনে ওই পদস্থ কর্মকর্তা নিজেও হতবাক হয়ে বলেন, বরকতুল্লাহর নাম তালিকায় ছিল। কিন্তু কেন শেষ মুহূর্তে তাঁকে বাদ দেওয়া হয়েছে, তা তিনি জানেন না।
ছাত্রলীগের সাবেক কেন্দ্রীয় নেতা সৈয়দ নুরুল ইসলাম মেধা তালিকায় ৬৫তম অবস্থানে আছেন। ৩৫ জনকে ডিঙিয়ে তাঁকে ঢাকা মহানগর পুলিশের উপকমিশনারের চলতি দায়িত্বে পদায়ন করা হয়। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্রলীগের আরেক নেতা মনিরুজ্জামানকে একইভাবে পদায়ন করা হয়েছে।
দিনাজপুরের অতিরিক্ত পুলিশ সুপার মোস্তাফিজুর রহমানের বিরুদ্ধে বিভাগীয় মামলা চলছে। তবু তাঁকে ইন্ডাস্ট্রিয়াল পুলিশের এসপির দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছে। বিভাগীয় মামলা চলছে এ কে এম এহসান উল্লাহর বিরুদ্ধেও। তাঁকে হাইওয়ে পুলিশের (পশ্চিম) পুলিশ সুপার পদে (চলতি দায়িত্ব) পদায়ন করা হয়েছে।
যোগাযোগ করা হলে সাবেক আইজিপি এ এস এম শাহজাহান বলেন, পুলিশের নিয়োগ ও পদোন্নতি মেধার ভিত্তিতে করতে হবে। তা না হলে ভালো পুলিশ গড়ে উঠবে না। দলীয় পরিচয় পদোন্নতির মাপকাঠি হলে পুলিশের সংস্কার আর কোনো দিনই হবে না।

Feds: Crooked TSA Screeners Arrested in Drug Trafficking Scheme

Multiple airport screeners have been arrested for allegedly taking handsome bribes to look the other way while loads of illegal drugs slipped through security at Los Angeles International Airport, federal officials announced today.

Two current and two former officials at the Transportation Security Administration were arrested in the last 48 hours in connection with at least five incidents from February 2011 to July 2011 in which on duty screeners took payments of up to $2,400 to allow suitcases filled with drugs to pass unimpeded through X-ray machines at LAX, U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr.'s office said in a statement.

According to Birotte's office, the scheme was uncovered after a member of the alleged conspiracy accidentally went through the wrong security line and was busted by TSA screeners who were not in on the plot. In another case, a TSA screener unknowingly arranged with a confidential source for the Drug Enforcement Administration to receive $1,200 for a shipment of methamphetamine to pass through security.

The current TSA employees, 23-year-old John Whitfield and 25-year-old Capeline McKinney, and the former screeners, 30-year-old Naral Richardson and 27-year-old Joy White, are all expected to be arraigned in Los Angeles today. If convicted, each could potentially face life in prison, Birotte's office said. The plot also allegedly involved a couple of known drug runners.

"Airport screeners act as a vital checkpoint for homeland security, and air travelers should believe in the fundamental integrity of security systems at our nation's airports," Birotte said. "The allegations in this case describe a significant breakdown of the screening system through the conduct of individuals who placed greed above the nation's security needs."

A spokesperson for the TSA did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this report, but Randy Parsons, the TSA Federal Security Director at LAX, said in the statement from Birotte's office the TSA "has assured the investigating agencies we will do everything we can to assist in their investigation."

"While the arrests are a disappointment, TSA is committed to holding our employees to the highest standards," he said.

Secret Service moves to oust three more in prostitution scandal

The Secret Service announced Tuesday that two more agents connected to the embarrassing Cartagena, Colombia prostitution scandal had chosen to resign and that the agency was moving to fire a third.

The news came shortly after President Barack Obama, taping an appearance on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," blamed the uproar on "a couple of knuckleheads" in an otherwise "incredible" agency.

Assistant Director Paul Morrissey from the Secret Service Office of Government and Public Affairs announced the latest personnel news in a written statement that also specified that two other agents had been cleared of serious wrongdoing and would face "administrative action." A U.S. government official familiar with the situation told Yahoo News that could mean anything from a verbal rebuke by a supervisor to a few days of leave.

"The Secret Service's investigation into allegations of misconduct by its employees in Cartagena, Colombia, continues," Morrissey said in the statement.Two more employees have chosen to resign in connection to the scandal, in which agents preparing for Obama's visit to an international summit in Cartagena allegedly brought prostitutes back to their hotel.

The agency is moving to permanently revoke the security clearance of one other individual, a process that allows that person to appeal. If the appeal fails, the employee "must separate" from the agency, Morrissey said.

If that happens, the number of agents who will have resigned, retired or been removed over the controversy will reach nine. Three have been cleared of serious wrongdoing, meaning the agency has addressed the status of all 12 employees under investigation.

"The Secret Service is committed to conducting a full, thorough and fair investigation in this matter, and will not hesitate to take appropriate action should any additional information come to light," Morrissey said.
